The Dastaar Project
The Dastaar - whether called a turban, pagh, pagri, or dumalla- is far more than a piece of cloth. It is a sacred crown that symbolizes Sikh identity, courage, dignity, respect, and pride. Worn by our Gurus and embraced by both Sikh men and women, it represents a commitment to equality, service, and standing up for what is right.
For me, the Dastaar has always been deeply personal. I grew up watching members of my family wear it with pride, and today I see my husband tie his Dastaar every morning. Over the years, I have come to appreciate that while the Dastaar makes a person stand out, it also has a remarkable way of bringing people together.
Again and again, I have watched my husband walk into rooms full of strangers and leave having formed genuine connections. Before a single word is spoken, the Dastaar often sparks curiosity, conversation, and familiarity. It invites questions, opens doors, and creates moments of human connection that might never have happened otherwise. These experiences inspired me to begin collecting stories about the Dastaar. Not simply as an article of faith, but as a bridge between people.

Preserving Stories. Celebrating Connection.
The Dastaar Project is a community-powered storytelling initiative that collects and preserves personal stories about the Sikh turban from around the world. These are everyday moments- meeting a neighbor, starting a conversation, walking across a graduation stage, or being seen in a new way- that reflect identity, belonging, pride, and human connection. Together, they form a living archive that will be shared as a book and other formats.

Moments That Stay With Us
Here is a story shared by a dear friend
A Sikh student moved from India to study at a prestigious university near New York. He arrived with a friend, hopeful but without a place to stay.
They spent the entire day searching for an apartment. Despite having strong paperwork, a clean record, and a reasonable budget, nothing worked out. As evening came, disappointment began to settle in.
Around 8 p.m., while walking back, they noticed an older man struggling with heavy garbage bins and stepped in to help him.
The man asked them what they were doing out so late and why they looked so discouraged. The student shared their situation—the search, the rejections, and the uncertainty.
The man listened quietly. Then he told them not to worry. He owned several apartments in the city and asked them to come the next day.
By the following afternoon, they had a home.
Later, they learned he had previously had a meaningful experience with a Sikh individual and immediately recognized the Dastaar. But in that moment, what mattered most was simple: trust, kindness, and a door that opened when they needed it most.

WHY THIS PROJECT
The Dastaar Project was created to preserve and celebrate these stories.
There is a quiet beauty in everyday human moments—friendship formed in passing, kindness offered without expectation, trust between strangers, and the sense of belonging that can appear in an instant.
This project focuses on these moments.
- The ones that make people smile years later.
- The moments that stay with us.
- The encounters where strangers become familiar.
- The simple reminders of connection, generosity, and shared humanity.
Our hope is to build a living collection of personal stories that show how the Dastaar appears in everyday life across countries, cultures, languages, and generations.
Over time, these stories will be brought together into a book and shared across other formats, creating a lasting archive of lived experiences. At its heart, this project is about the ways people find connection in the world, often in the most unexpected and human ways.

HOW YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE
If you have a meaningful or joyful story connected to the Dastaar, I would love to hear from you.

Your story does not need to be dramatic. In fact, it is often the small, everyday moments that stay with us the longest:
- A stranger who helped you because they recognized your Dastaar
- An unexpected friendship while traveling
- A childhood memory
- A funny or heartwarming encounter
- A moment that made you feel seen, welcomed, or connected
- A story passed down through generations
Stories are welcome from anywhere in the world and from every generation. These stories will become part of a growing collection that will be shared as a book and through other formats, creating a lasting archive of lived experiences.
The goal of this project is simple: to collect and share stories that bring warmth, humanity, and joy into the world.
